Though luxury and elegance remain the essence of this style, there is a lot of emphasis on comfort and functionality.

There’s an emphasis on the usage of sturdy furniture pieces, high-quality materials, and carefully crafted quality products that would last longer.

Colour Palette

Modern English designs incorporate neutral colours with bright and bold accents. A monochrome palette, preferably white, is the most popular base colour. It creates a sense of airiness and opens up the space. Black is used mainly for accent pieces. It lends sophistication and a quaint English charm.

Neutral colours such as ivory, crème, or light beige have a unique English flavour and they blend seamlessly in a modern or contemporary setting.

Gray and taupe can be matched with wood tones – both flooring and furniture, for an elegant and modern look.

But modern English designs are not just about dull colours.

Bold colours, floral prints, and jewel-toned hues make the interiors vibrant.

Curtains, rugs, carpets, or wallpapers in floral prints are very appealing to the eye.

Emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red are a few popular jewel tones. These deeply saturated colours add a touch of luxury and sophistication. They can also be used to create a focal point in a room. If the rest of your room is in a lighter colour, you can use bold-coloured throws, pillows, blankets etc to add a pleasing contrast. Patterned wallpapers are a good option too.

Style, comfort, and elegance are the most important characteristics of Modern English designs. There is a lot of emphasis on the usage of Victorian furniture, upholstered items, plush fabrics, rich leather, velvet cushions etc.

Rugs in vibrant colours or intricate patterns bring a touch of sophistication to the interiors.

Curtains, on the other hand, add elegance and simplicity. Sheer curtains, antique-inspired prints, and neutral hues are popularly used.

Lighting

Modern English designs make use of soft, diffused and natural lighting to create a soothing atmosphere. Layered lighting is an integral part of modern English designs.

Sheer curtains help modify the brightness and ensure light is not intense and uncomfortable.

Large windows, skylights, and atriums help in allowing sunlight to brighten up the space. Mirrors create an illusion of openness. By reflecting light, they make the room brighter.

Pendant lights for accentuating specific areas. Wall sconces for illuminating hallways, corridors, or other spaces where overhead lighting is not needed. Recessed ceiling lights for a diffused effect. Floor lamps or table lamps provide elegance.

Wall Panels and Decorative Trims

Modern English Design is incomplete without decorative wall panels. Crown mouldings and Wainscotting are two of the most popular decorative trims that add texture, depth and elegance to the interiors.

Apart from these basic elements, wallpapers, vintage clocks, bookshelves, antique vases or other items with an old-world charm are used to achieve the perfect Modern English look. Artworks or paintings can be used as long as they blend in with the rest of the elements.

Apart from Modern English Designs, these are a few of the most popular design styles –
