Top Interior Design Trends 2023 – What’s In, What’s Not?

2022 saw most of us cooped in our homes. Our homes doubled up as offices as well as schools. Hence, there was an emphasis on comfortable and functional spaces in home interiors, with a focus on incorporating natural elements and creating a sense of tranquillity. Soothing pastels and all whites were the most popular choices as a soothing colour palette and an all-encompassing furniture style dominated the scene.

2023, on the other hand, is all about going out and shedding those comfy pajamas in which we attended zoom meetings! Interior design is seeing a shift in trends too. This year is all about bright and bold choices.

While a few of the trends from 2022 are still making their presence felt, a few trends are definitely out. Open-concept floorplans are slowly disappearing. Aesthetically pleasing wood hoods are replacing cold metal hoods. Boho designs, once considered chic and trendy, are fading away.

The untextured look once in vogue has almost vanished. Hard finishes are being favoured to bring in more colours, depth, dimension, and vibrancy.

In this article, we explore some of the key trends from 2022 that we have to watch for in the coming year:

Natural materials and Sustainability

In 2022, many designers turned to sustainable and naturally occurring materials. And now, since more and more citizens are turning conscious of their actions, planet-friendly practices continue to remain in demand. Natural materials are a great way to introduce an organic feel to a space and help to create a sense of connection with nature.

Sustainable, organic materials like wood, stone, cork and other earthy materials in flooring, cabinetry, and decorative accents will continue to remain popular choices. These materials add warmth and texture to a space and create a soothing atmosphere. Apart from that, they are sustainable and better for the environment.

2022 was the year of dull whites and neutrals shades. Though white and neutral colours have mostly fallen out of the popularity rung, they are still being used to maintain balance, especially in those areas of the home where you want to create a feeling of calm.

A trend that is expected to be big in 2023 is the use of colour to create mood and atmosphere in a space. Bold, saturated hues have made a comeback, and are becoming increasingly popular in living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms as a way to add visual interest and energy to a space.

In 2022, many people attempted to bring nature into their homes by adopting the concept of biophilic design. Incorporating elements of nature into their homes helped bring restore normalcy and freshness. Green plants, botanical patterns, natural lighting, and organic materials are a few of the natural elements that are commonly used. The use of natural elements promotes well-being and improves mental and physical health. It also helps in creating a connection with the outdoors.

Mossy greens, mineral shades, and raw unfinished textures are a few of the popular choices.

Apart from interior design, biophilia is gaining popularity in material design as well. Unconventional raw ingredients like fruit peels, dried fruit skin, petals, fungus, etc are being explored to create newer and more sustainable materials.

This trend will continue to make its presence felt in 2023 too.

The second half of 2022 saw textured prints and designs gaining popularity. Textured fabrics will continue to dominate the design scene in 2023 as well.

Textured fabrics are a great way of adding visual interest to a space. It also helps to create a sense of warmth and coziness. Bouclé, mohair, and velvet are a few popular furnishing materials. Apart from textured fabrics, we will be witnessing a lot of textured wall finishes, vases, mirror frames, lamps, etc.

Mix-n-Match

Monochromatic and single-layered designs are plain and can get monotonous. 2022 witnessed a trend of mixing different materials and elements to create interesting spaces. Wood, steel, stone, wool, fur, and glass, were all mixed and matched to create creative zones.

In 2023, this trend will continue to be seen.

Along with it, an interesting amalgamation of the past and present is happening. Design pieces from different eras are about to make an appearance together. We are going to witness pre-loved furniture items, lamps, vases, rugs, or other décor items making a comeback and finding a home with their latest counterparts.

However, as designers, we feel that regardless of the trend, making the home a comfortable space should remain the top priority. Trends will come and go, but your home should always be a reflection of your personality and taste.
